New online solar power calculator

Home and business owners thinking about installing a solar system can now make a more informed decision, thanks to useful information from a newly developed online solar power potential calculator.

Launched earlier this month, the APVI Solar Potential Tool (SunSPoT) allows users to estimate electricity generation potential via PV on building roofs across a range of buildings in six Australian cities: Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Just enter an address and the tool accounts for solar radiation and weather, PV system area, tilt, orientation, and shading from nearby buildings and vegetation.

SunSPoT was developed by the Australian Photovoltaics Institute (API) and UNSW. Development was funded by the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs program. The developers say it is a preliminary information tool and should not be regarded as a substitute for an on-site assessment performed by a certified professional. The website also suggests that the results are estimates only and may be inaccurate due to incomplete or out-of-date building models and GIS data, but it’s a useful starting point for home and business owners wondering if a solar installation is for them.
