Expansive pool with orchard views

Monday, 28 April, 2014

A family in the suburb of Bickley, Western Australia, contacted Dolphin Pools wanting the company to construct a large freeform concrete pool, large spa, beach and wading area, and an entertaining deck to overlook their orchard.

To make the most of the view from the house over the expansive fruit orchard, Dolphin Pools suggested a vanishing edge pool would be the most suitable option.

When construction began there was a hold-up of nearly two months due to the discovery that a septic tank and leech drain needed to be relocated. Aside from the initial hold-up, the project ran smoothly until construction was complete.

To bring the pool up to the level of the house, the pool was built 1.5 m above existing ground level. The complete pool, spa and beach area is built using double steel, 230 mm-thick concrete walls.

The scale of the pool is vast. The vanishing edge is 17 m in length with another 1.3 m down to the balance tank/pond, which at 300 mm deep, 700 mm wide and 19 m in length is a feature in itself. The beach area measures an impressive 18 m in length.

The pool interior has two different finishes including Ezzari glass mosaic tiles and Gemtex, with the sky blue colour used in the beach area and turquoise used in the pool area. The Gemtex interior has also been used in the spa, which measures 2.4 m in width and 3.5 m in length, with the seats in sky blue and the foot well in turquoise.

The granite header coping on the pool and spa were custom cut to suit the pool and spa, while the vanishing edge wall is tiled in rustic rock cladding to match the local ground colouring.

The balance tank/pond walls are fully tiled with Ezzari glass mosaics, with the base of the pond finished in sky blue Gemtex. There are four lights in the pond, which makes an eye-catching feature at night. During the day, the pond blends into the lawn area, making it appear endless.

Dolphin Pools also designed and constructed a wet deck with Mod Wood, flowing from the house right up to the pool’s edge. A Viron connect 10 system was installed in the alfresco area so the owners can conveniently control the pool and spa.

The pool was awarded gold in the 2013 SPASA WA Awards of Excellence in the category of ‘concrete pool, freeform and natural over $100,000’.
