Industry Profile

Introducing Robert Anderson, General Manager of Pool and Spa Poppits a Division of Waterco Limited.

I was born in WA then educated in WA and NSW, before completing tertiary studies in marketing and administration at the University of South Australia.

I lived in Hong Kong for 5 years covering 13 countries in Asia and 5 years in the Philippines as Manager for The Dow Chemical Company.

Following a long history in chemical products Marketing and General Management- ranging from industrial, agricultural, plastics, pharmaceutical and cleaning products, I purchased the business known as Pool Poppits in August 2002. That business has grown more than 5 times over the 10 years and Waterco acquired it on September 28 this year.

There have been so many highlights even in these last few years. Our products being selected by the National Asthma Council as the only sanitising system of choice for people with asthma and allergies and the acceptance of a product for patent that we invented are two that quickly come to mind.

The biggest issue currently challenging the pool and spa industry is undoubtedly the lack of confidence by the Australian public going forward. As an industry we have survived droughts, floods, water restrictions, earthquakes and the initial global financial problems.  However it seems that with 3 bad summer seasons, and a two-speed economy - many in the industry are doing it tough.

As an industry we are sympathetic with the public and would love to see more stability and strong leadership.

Australia is still a country that is in a very good shape compared to most and investment in the home by adding a pool or spa is always going to add value to people's investment.

Personally we are delighted that Waterco has a long-term vision for its business and that it chose to acquire the Poppits business. Our dreams to market a completely chlorine free system for swimming pools was shared by Waterco and we are excited in anticipation of what this will mean for those families who have asthmatic or allergy sufferers.
